Healing Poetry - "The Wash"

Hearing this poem forced me to stop. Stop overthinking. Stop dilly dallying hoping that doing "busy work" will make up for all the, absolutely necessary, things I've avoided doing. Stop putting off the work of healing through writing!
The reality of all we've been through can be hard to face even on our best days. We find ways to cope. Unknowingly, we turn to food, alcohol, drugs, relationships, shopping, and prioritizing working above everything. We fantasize about what life could've been and choose to live there rather than face the hard truth. The truth of who we are and what we've been through can be a difficult place to visit so we avoid it.
When we are dedicated to healing we tell ourselves the truth. No matter how hard, gut-wrenching and ugly the truth is- we tell ourselves the truth. Our trauma lives with us. We can't eat it away. We can't sleep it away. We can't wash it away. We heal when we allow ourselves to release the shame and guilt we've carried all our lives. We heal through acknowledgement, and through the telling and the sharing of our story.
Whether by poem, book, short story, song, or art, commit to healing. You deserve it!
